Loretta was there before Rachael had even risen from bed.

Rachael woke, stiff from having slept too long in one position, and heard Jack’s cousin’s voice in the other room. The woman’s sultry tones were punctuated by Jack’s deep laugh as the two shared some joke.

Rachael sat up and stared balefully down at herself. The coral silk of her skirt and blouse were a mass of wrinkles and she didn’t doubt her face looked the same. Her hair hung untidily over her eyes and she imagined her gloomy expression would frighten small children.

When she’d taken the pain reliever last night and had laid down to relax the headache away, she’d only wanted to escape. Just the thought of spending the evening with Jack and his gorgeous cousin, Jack and Loretta side-by-side a constant reminder of how perfect a match they were, was enough to send Rachael into hiding.

She’d intended to rest a few minutes until the headache eased, then call for room service. She’d never expected to fall asleep, let alone sleep through the night fully clothed. Now she had to face Jack and Loretta with a sleep-fogged brain and a wrinkled face.

Rising, she tugged the hem of her blouse free of her skirt and started to pull it over her head. She dropped the shirt back around her waist when she noticed her bedroom door was half-open. She could swear she’d left it nearly closed last night.

She swung it shut, latching it quietly. She’d just as soon Jack and Loretta not know she was up yet. Quickly tossing aside her clothes, she headed for the bathroom and into a hot shower. She sighed as the spray coursed over her body, the water driving the last of the cobwebs from her brain.

Clean and refreshed, she crossed to the closet and flipped through the hangers for something to wear. They’d be taping the commercial today and Jack had told her the production company would be providing the clothes for the shoot. Going for comfort, she pulled an amethyst and royal blue skort from the closet, and a short-sleeved purple sweater to match. A pair of low-heeled, strappy sandals completed the outfit.

Her hair dried and tucked back neatly with two combs, Rachael figured she was as presentable as she was likely to get. Girding her loins as if for battle, she pasted a big smile on her face and strode through her bedroom door.

Her determined pace stuttered when she saw only Loretta standing in the living area. The dark-haired woman greeted Rachael with a smile that held just a trace of challenge, a faintly superior look in her blue eyes.

“Ready for your day of fame?” Loretta asked.

Rachael wiped suddenly damp palms on the folds of her skort. “The commercial, you mean? I suppose I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”

“I’m sure you’ll do fine,” Loretta said, although her tone implied otherwise.

“Where’s Jack?” Rachael asked as casually as she could.

“He went down to check on a fax he was expecting.” Loretta’s smile broadened. “Just as well.
